The Origin of True Divine Love
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
This verse reveals the essence of the Gospel: the initiative of love belongs entirely to God. We often try to earn divine favor through our efforts, but the Bible clarifies that we were loved even before we had any inclination to seek the Lord. Love is not a human feeling that ascends, but a divine grace that descends.
John uses the word "propitiation" (or atoning sacrifice) to demonstrate that Jesus didn't just show the way, but He Himself removed the barrier of sin that kept us from the Creator. This sacrifice is the ultimate proof that we are not defined by our failures, but by the value God assigned to us by giving His own Son in our place.
In practice, understanding this concept transforms how we relate to others. If we are loved unconditionally and sacrificially, we are empowered to love others without expecting anything in return. Christian love is, therefore, a reflection of gratitude for having been found by God's mercy first.
