Pressing on toward the goal with purpose
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
The apostle Paul uses an athletic metaphor to describe the spiritual journey. He acknowledges that life with God isn't about immediate perfection, but about constant, focused progress. To move forward, it is essential not to be paralyzed by past mistakes or former glories.
Forgetting what is behind doesn't mean having amnesia; it means stripping the emotional weight from what has already passed. When we let go of yesterday's burdens, our hands are free to grasp the opportunities the Lord places before us today.
Practically, this invites us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is our ultimate prize. In every daily challenge, we are called to persist, knowing our motivation doesn't come from this world, but from an eternal, heavenly purpose.
