Courage and the presence of God
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This verse marks the transition of leadership after the death of Moses. God speaks directly to Joshua, preparing him for the challenging mission of leading the people of Israel to the Promised Land. The command is not based on Joshua's self-confidence, but on the sovereignty and faithfulness of the One who sent him.
For us, Christian courage is not the absence of fear, but obedience in spite of it. Discouragement and dread are natural human feelings when facing the unknown, but the promise of divine presence acts as an antidote to spiritual paralysis.
In daily life, being strong and courageous means trusting that God is already in the future that worries us so much. Whether in new projects, family crises, or tough decisions, the certainty that the Lord walks beside us gives us the stability we need to not give up.
