True Wisdom Before God

This verse from Proverbs invites us to a stance of deep intellectual and spiritual humility. Being 'wise in your own eyes' is a warning against pride and self-sufficiency, which prevent us from learning and recognizing our dependence on God. True intelligence begins when we admit we don't know everything and seek the Creator's guidance. The fear of the Lord mentioned here isn't paralyzing dread, but a reverent respect that positions us correctly before divine greatness. When we acknowledge who God is, we naturally want to turn away from what displeases Him, meaning we consciously and intentionally begin to shun evil. In practice, applying this principle means consulting God before making important decisions and being open to advice and correction. When we abandon the arrogance of thinking our ways are always the best, we make space for the Holy Spirit's peace and direction to guide our lives along safe and fruitful paths.
