The danger of anger and the pursuit of peace

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.
Salmos 37:8NVI
This verse from Psalm 37 is practical advice from King David on the importance of self-control. Anger is a natural human emotion, but when we allow it to turn into wrath or resentment, we lose the ability to discern God's will. The text warns us that acting on the impulse of irritation often leads to wrong decisions and painful consequences. For the Christian, rejecting wrath doesn't mean suppressing feelings, but surrendering them to the control of the Holy Spirit. Instead of reacting with bitterness toward life's injustices or frustrations, we are invited to trust in divine justice. When we stop fretting excessively, we create space for the peace of Christ to guard our hearts. In practice, this teaching calls us to patience. Before responding to a provocation or exploding in a moment of stress, remember that gentleness is a virtue that builds up, while lack of control only destroys. Seeking serenity is a form of spiritual protection for your life and your relationships.
