Focusing on what is eternal
“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.”
In this verse, the psalmist presents a sincere petition for focus and discernment. We live in a world filled with visual distractions and appeals that seek to divert our attention from what is truly essential. The request to 'turn my eyes away' is a recognition of our fragility and the need for divine help so as not to get lost in futilities.
The second part of the verse is a cry for spiritual vitality. By asking to live in the paths laid out by God, we understand that true life is not found in what is fleeting, but in obedience and alignment with the Creator's will. It is an invitation to exchange empty entertainment for real purpose.
In practice, this Psalm teaches us to filter what we consume daily, from social media to our anxieties. When we intentionally decide to look to Jesus, our priorities are reorganized, and we find the vigor necessary to walk with integrity and joy.
